Depression needs attention after a spinal cord injury

The mental and emotional effects of a spinal cord injury can lead to you not really feeling like yourself. You might start to feel down or like you are useless. The loss of your independence and the new life that you are living can lead to you becoming depressed. If you are dealing with depression after your spinal cord injury, you need to seek out mental health care so that you can learn to live your life to fullest extent possible.

There is a difference between feeling down and depression. If you are just feeling down, those feelings will go away and you will return to your normal self. With depression, those down feelings continue on and on. They impact your life in more ways that you might realize.

People who suffered an injury to their spinal cord are at an increased risk of suicidal thoughts. In fact, the risk of suicide in people with a spinal cord injury is highest in the first five years after the accident.

If you are feeling like you can't carry on with your life or if you feel like your outlook on life has changed, you might need to seek mental health help. Depression can cause changes in your energy level, your sleep habits, and the way you enjoy your life.

Depression is treatable if you reach out for help. Counseling, medication, and other therapy options can help you to learn to live your life and overcome the depression. If you are worried about finances for all of this and your accident was caused by someone's negligence, you might choose to seek compensation in Ontario.
