Each step on the road to recovery is crucial after a brain injury

There are several different things that will likely happen if you suffer from a traumatic brain injury. The first of these is that you will be evaluated to determine what emergency care you need. You will likely go through an emergency department to get that initial stabilising care. From there, you will probably remain in the hospital until you are well enough to go home or to an inpatient rehabilitation program. Each step in the process is important since they all work together to help you regain function after the accident.

The exact path that your recovery takes will depend on several factors. For example, if you are dependent upon a ventilator to breathe or have severe injuries, your path to recovery might include time in an intensive care unit.

Generally, your medical team will start you on a rehabilitation program soon after your diagnosis. This program might start while you are still in the hospital. The level of rehabilitation will be determined by your health, strength and severity of injuries. There are some instances in which a person wouldn't be able to do intensive rehabilitation. In that case, the person might undergo subacute rehabilitation.

As your rehabilitation moves forward, the manner in which you receive the rehabilitation services might change. You might go from an inpatient rehabilitation to a day rehabilitation program to an outpatient rehabilitation.

The important thing to remember when you are working on your rehabilitation goals is that you are working hard now so you can enjoy your future. In some cases, seeking compensation might also help you to enjoy your future.
