Falls are a leading cause of brain injury

While slipping, or tripping and falling, may seem amusing when we see it done on TV or in a movie, these falls can cause serious harm. In fact, falls are one of the leading causes of brain injury.

Many of these falls occur in the workplace. About 60,000 workers are injured annually in falls, and many occur on level ground. Brain injuries are one of the more serious, and sometimes fatal, types of injuries incurred by falls. People can also suffer broken bones, back injuries and other problems that require medical care and rehabilitation.

When people are injured in falls in the workplace or in a public location such as a grocery store, shopping center, restaurant or on the walkway of a business due to a spill or icy conditions that were not taken care of, they may be able to hold the company or entity responsible for failing to keep the location safe and well-maintained liable.

Falls are largely preventable. Employers and businesses have a responsibility to keep floors clear of tripping hazards, to clean up spills and to place signs where the floors have been freshly mopped. In cold, rainy weather, as we often have in Ontario, it's important to take extra precautions both inside and outside to prevent slipping and falling.

If workers are required to work in conditions where there are slipping or tripping hazards, it's essential that they be provided with appropriate footwear and be trained to protect themselves from injury. Sometimes, improving the lighting can make a big difference in helping people avoid unnecessary accidents.

If you have been injured in a fall that you believe could have been prevented if proper safety precautions had been taken by a business, it may be worthwhile to consult a personal injury lawyer to see what your options are. Injuries from a fall can have a serious financial impact. There's no reason why you should have to bear that burden if someone else could and should have prevented the accident.
