Helping victims of drunk driving accidents

As the holiday season rolls around again, unfortunately there are going to be more people than ever on Toronto roads who are in no condition to drive. Many people lose track of how many drinks they've had at a holiday party or after-hours office get-together and mistakenly think that they're fine to drive when they aren't. They may be too embarrassed to call a taxi or an Uber to get home.

Even if you do everything right and don't drink and drive, you can't guarantee that others will be so responsible. Pedestrians and bicyclists are particularly vulnerable. MADD Canada has some sobering statistics on the number of injuries and fatalities that are caused by impaired drivers:

-- In 2010, approximately 2,500 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes throughout Canada. Of those, almost half were determined to be related to driver impairment. Likely, according to MADD, this statistic is lower than the real number.

-- That same year, nearly 300,000 people were injured in crashes. Of those, the group estimates, over one-fifth of those involved an impaired driver.

-- In recent years, there has been an increase in drug-related accidents.

-- These numbers don't include boat, aircraft and other types of vehicle accidents.

Obviously, anyone convicted of driving under the influence is subject to criminal penalties. However, that doesn't help the victims of these accidents and their families handle expenses for medical care, physical therapy, and, if the victim does not survive the crash, burial costs. Lost wages can also devastate a family's finances. They may also be entitled to other damages.

At Romeo Pitaro Personal Injury lawyers, we work to see that the accident is thoroughly investigated. We also work to determine whether another person or business, such as a bar or restaurant, that served the driver alcohol can be held in part liable for the crash. If the drunk driver was in a commercial vehicle, the owner of the vehicle and/or the driver's employer may be held liable.

We offer a free consultation to victims of accidents and survivors of those killed in an accident. Call or contact us online to find out how we can help you.
