Accused hit-and-run driver in fatal accident caught

Recently we discussed what to do if you're involved in an accident with a hit-and-run driver. Sadly, these accidents, from fender-benders to fatal collisions, happen far too often in Ontario. Just this month, police arrested a Guelph man in connection with an accident that killed a 24-year-old woman.

The 21-year-old man is facing a host of charges besides those for leaving the scene of the fatal crash. He has also been charged with theft, breaking and entering and possession of property that was obtained by criminal actions.

According to Guelph police, the accident occurred just after 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 13. The man drove through a R.I.D.E checkpoint on Woolwich Street and hit the victim's vehicle. The vehicle landed upside down. When first responders arrived, the victim was seriously injured, but they were able to stabilize her. She passed away later at the hospital, however.

After talking with residents in the area and conducting a search for the driver who struck the victim, investigators located the driver. The police thanked members of the community who "contributed to the quick and timely arrest of this male." It was not clear whether officers at the checkpoint chased down the driver after he allegedly ran through it.

This time of year, there are plenty of DUI checkpoints on Ontario roads attempting to discourage people from driving under the influence and catching those who are. Sometimes people do dangerous and unwise things to avoid getting caught, putting others on the road at risk as well as themselves.

If you or a loved one have been injured or worse by a hit-and-run driver, chances are that he or she will face criminal charges if and when caught. However, you still can and should consider taking civil action in order to recover compensation to help cover medical bills, burial costs, lost wages and other damages.
